Vietnamese Egg Coffee in Hanoi Old Quarter
Egg coffee (cà phê trứng) is one of Hanoi's best-loved café drinks: strong Vietnamese coffee under a thick, velvety cream. Here is what it is, where it comes from, and how to try it at Drop In Café & Bistro.

What is Vietnamese egg coffee?
Egg coffee is a layered drink. Strong Vietnamese coffee, traditionally brewed through a phin filter, sits beneath a whisked egg-yolk cream. The topping is sweet, smooth and custard-like, so the first spoonful feels closer to a dessert, while the coffee below stays bold. Stir the two together and you get a softer, creamier cup.
A Hanoi story
Egg coffee is widely traced back to Hanoi in the 1940s, when fresh milk was hard to find and a bartender is said to have whisked egg yolk into a creamy stand-in. Today it is a symbol of the city's café culture, and many visitors make it one of their first stops in the Old Quarter.
Egg coffee at Drop In
Our egg coffee pairs phin coffee with an egg-yolk cream made with plant-based whipping cream and no condensed milk. It still contains egg, so it is not vegan. If you have an allergy or dietary requirement, please tell our team before ordering.
