Vietnamese Salted Coffee in Hanoi

Salted coffee (cà phê muối) is a Vietnamese favourite that mixes sweet, creamy and savoury in one cup. If you are curious about how it tastes, or how it differs from egg coffee, start here.

What is Vietnamese salted coffee?

Salted coffee pairs strong Vietnamese coffee with a creamy topping that has a little salt in it. The salt is a gentle accent rather than the main flavour: it rounds off the bitterness and makes the sweetness and richness stand out. It is generally associated with Huế in central Vietnam and is now found in cafés across the country.

Salted coffee vs egg coffee

Both drinks have a creamy layer over strong coffee, but they taste different. Egg coffee has a custard-like, dessert-style topping made with egg yolk. Salted coffee has a creamy topping with a touch of salt, giving a sweet-and-savoury contrast. If you cannot decide, order one of each with a friend and compare.

Salted coffee at Drop In

At Drop In, a creamy topping with a hint of salt meets the coffee below, bringing sweetness, richness and a gently savoury finish into the same cup. If you enjoy creamy coffee but want something beyond the usual sweet finish, it is a good place to start. Taste the layers together and notice how the flavour changes as you sip.
